Parking on Park Ave moved; officer did not get the memo

parkingenforcment3

Despite moving the loading zone on Park Avenue, adding a sign alerting motorists to the change and adding a fresh coat of red paint, this police officer still blocked the lane forcing cyclists into the streetcar tracks.

According to section D of A.R.S. 28-815L: A person shall not operate, stop, park or leave standing a vehicle in a path or lane designated as a bicycle path or lane by a state or local authority except in the case of emergency or for crossing the path or lane to gain access to a public or private road or driveway.

As Luci and I approached the car, I assumed the officer was responding to a call of some sort, but then I saw the officer come out of Paradise Bakery with a bag of food.

Here’s the sign that is right next to the officer’s car:

parkingI told the officer, I was going to wait for him to leave because otherwise I would have to maneuver my bike over the tracks and that they made the area no parking to prevent that dangerous situation.

He mumbled something and drove away.

I keep hoping police officers will begin enforcing the parking violations along the route, but some can’t even seem to follow them.

hey mike: i'm curious: last time i checked with TPTB (the powers that be) in both Tucson and Pima Co. they steadfastly refused to admit they had "designated bike lanes" (you can see this for yourself on the official Tucson/Pima bikeways map, note the lingo: "Bike Route with Striped Shoulder" and the predominance of the color red http://bikeped.pima.gov/Pubs/MetroBikeMap%2011-26-12%20INTERIOR.pdf ) -- have they finally 'fessed up?

None of that means *anyone* should park there! I would imagine/guess you have a city ordinance about no parking at red curbs, or somesuch.

For the curious -- More about AASHTO standards and designated bike lanes at http://azbikelaw.org/blog/aashto-guide-for-the-development-of-bicycle-facilities/#comment-13437

Hey, everyone! I actually wrote TPD and Council member Steve Kozachik (Ward VI) yesterday when I read the story. I just heard back from Kozachik last night:

"Alex, I'll pass along the incident to one of the TPD leadership so he can put out a reminder to the guys on the street. Thanks for the head's up.

Steve K"

Still waiting on a response from TPD. I think I'll be waiting a while. If anyone's interested in reading my email, let me know and I can sent it to you (don't want to clog up the message board)

Nicely done, Mike.  You didn't get up his nose, but you made your point!  Cops, and politicians, they think the laws are for everyone except them.  Oh, I forgot, drunk assistants to politicians also think they're exempt.  We've had a few of those lately.

I would pass this along to the police in a respectful way.

@UAwildcatx2 Good idea! Koz is a good one to go to with stuff like this.

@ianjohn27 When I read, "One word: boll..." I thought it was going a different way. Until "...ards."
