Weekend open thread: June 25

I didn't actually do anything, although I did start looking at the code. It is concerning when things fix themselves because they often break again.I am still going to see if I can add a scroll bar just in case.

Something changed for the better - the "post" button is now in sight even though the bottom of the window still extends off the bottom of the screen. Before, the "email" and "name" fields started *below* the account menu on the left side of the window, now it starts next to the menu much higher on the screen. This looks like the way it's supposed to be, the way it was before may have just been a problem with the way my browser downloaded it last session.Or else you fixed it already - if so, thanks!

In Firefox if you hold the Ctrl key down and simultaneously tap the +/= key you can enlarge the screen (and the pop up registration window), similarly to shrink the screen hold Ctrl down and tap the -/_ key, without having to change the screen resolution itself. Red Star hasn't found it necessary to do this on a desktop or laptop.

Can you send me a screen capture of what it looks like. I'll work on either making the login window smaller or adding a scrollbar. In the meantime, you could create an account with Disqus and not have to fill out the info each time. It will remember who you are and just let you post.

Ok, this new comment format really sucks! To post a comment from my netbook, the verification window for my name and email address run well below the bottom of this little 9" display, and the window will not scroll!!!I had to change my screen resolution down to so tiny I can't even read it just to get to the "post" button, then change it back.

That's always a nice thought, and of course *we* wouldn't have any problem with it, but I've watched two previous cities I've lived in literally kill off their downtown shopping district by doing exactly that. To be fair, some cities have managed to pull it off - Vegas' Fremont St, and that downtown street in Denver (I can't remember the name) come to mind - but I suppose that you have to have a vibrant enough downtown to start with that the driving public will put up with the inconvenience.

Well, you start off with maybe one night aweek..let the structure adapt and establishitself to support it..you know - utilize thoselots that sit empty a lot of the time - get thebike rikshaws working more for those whocan't walk a block or two - let people seehow peaceful it can be - keep the trafficnights around for ugly comparison - merchants start making some moneyand they will want more, more, more.Yea, and might as well dream big!

I've been thinking how great it would be if cars were banned from 4th Avenue. Of course the biggest complaint would come from business owners who don't want to cut the parking because it is already hard for people who drive to park down there. How about an underground parking lot somewhere close and then close off the street? A guy can dream, right?

Was having a burro at Martins the othernight and we were talking about how nice4th Ave. would be without all the parkedand moving metal. A lot of folks werewalking and being challenged crossingthe street by reckless drivers....it wasirritating both of us. It would be like abig traffic circle around using 3rd and5th ave/9th st. and University as thediversions leaving 4th Ave as thepeople area in the center....quiet, communal. FAMA should try something unique because Downtown will cut into their 'action' and already does on those car-choked 2nd Saturdays. Twice a year they nearly do that but it'sthe out-of the-area vendors that benefitand the locals lose out. Start out by doingit a bunch of times for the local merchant'sbenefit.There Bill, put that on your roundtable andpass it around.

Thanks for the link, Red Star. There would have been a lot of good spots in the interview to talk about bikes, but you are right, nothing.

Five aging and unhealthy potted-plants sit around a table and discuss transpo. Note there is no mention of bikes as transportation and no questioning by the potted-plant panelists regarding bikes. Note the fascination with really big budget numbers and process, and silly things like toy trains and high speed rail.
