UA lighting up campus for cyclists

In an effort to increase safety for cyclists on the University of Arizona campus, officials are installing flashing LED reflectors in areas that are particularly dangerous at night.

The reflectors have been placed so they light up the poles that separate bike paths from streets and can become a hazard for cyclists in the dark.

“Some of the students are riding around without lights on their bikes, which is a no no,” said Charles Franz, the UA Parking and Transportation program manager. “We are just trying to facilitate safety and highlight potential areas for cyclists to be aware of.”

According to Franz, the parking and transportation department is expanding the program to the entire UA campus and isn’t limiting it to bike projects.

The UA also installed the LED reflectors in a crosswalk on Mountain south of Speedway.
