Targeted enforcement on 4th Ave

Posted on March 24th, 2010 by

I got a note from a reader about targeted stop sign enforcement at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street.

She said the officer told her they have received complaints about both cars and bikes failing to stop at the stop signs. Because of that she said the officers are paying special attention to the intersection.

Be sure to come to a complete stop, especially if you are in the area.

Did an impromptu check at that intersection a little while ago.
Out of 11 cyclists heading North:
    2 stopped
    3 slowed and looked
    6 blew right through.
Didn’t count the ones going the other
directions, but they seemed to do a
    little better.

Clearly no officers out there, though?

After observing on three occasions, I am calling
    for stepped-up enforcement at 4th Ave./ 9th St.
Every wrong bicycling practice is illustrated in
    just a few minutes time.
85% blow through the intersection coming North
from the underpass. The other three directions are
a little better. Cyclists come up the west sidewalk and
enter the intersection against traffic. Saw a couple
coming north out of the underpass in the south-bound
traffic lane. They ride down next to the Coronado, enter
the intersection, loop around south to the underpass.
Unless they clamp down there, it’s just a matter of time…..
Saw two cars (one north, one south) blow the intersection,
too. I wonder if those red flashing LED outlined stop signs
    would help there.
