Rolling stops…

Check out TBL’s post on the bill that was introduced, for a second year in a row, which allows cyclists to roll through stop signs when it is safe to do so.

This is essentially what many cyclists already do, but it would be great to have it become law.

My only concern would be that some cyclists might take it to mean they don’t have to yield to drivers who legally have the right of way at an intersection.

It will be interesting to see what happens with this.

    It's a great idea. I doubt it will change actual behavior much at all, but it will cause the police to focus on other cycling activities that are actually dangerous - like no lights at night, wrong way riding, and riding on the sidewalks.

    I am working on a post that hammers home the point that stop signs aren't causing the accidents. It should be up sometime today.

    I get what you are saying about it being personal responsibility. And I certainly agree with you on that.

    I also think the actions of cyclist have an impact on how drivers view us as a whole. If a small minority of cyclists start blowing though stop signs altogether because of the bill, then drivers think we all do it.

    I'm afraid drivers will star thinking, "Give them in inch, they take a mile."

    All that said, I think it is a good bill and should be passed. And the Idaho data suggests it is a safe law for all involved.

    With all due respect, so what? So what if it some cyclists take it that way? Isn't that their stupid problem? Their stupidity? Their misdemeanor and, potentially, worse (for them) ?

    At some deep down level in these kinds of things there really is a personal responsibility kernel.
