Program that funded Cyclovia, racks, bike fest and more on chopping block; feedback needed today

I received an email from Tom Thivener, the city’s bike and pedestrian program manager this afternoon.

Apparently, today is the last day the public can comment on the Transportation Improvement Plan that Pima Association of Governments produces.

Thivener said in his email that PAG is considering eliminating a section of funding that promotes alternate transportation.

“This program has funded many things that help to encourage bike use such as:

  • Bike Fest (including event costs for Cyclovia)
  • Bike Racks, including on-street bike parking corrals
  • Bike Safety Classes (in partnership with Pima County)
  • Bike Helmets for youth
  • Airing of Public Service Announcements (on sharing the road, riding with traffic, how Hawk signals work, encouraging Biking 2 Work)
  • Bike Valet at large public events
  • Bike Rodeos for youth
  • Bike Boxes
  • Planning for future bicycle boulevards,” Thivener wrote in his email.

If you want to program to continue, Thivener said you should fill out the comment form and return it today. Be sure to mention the “Tucson – Alternate Modes Program.”

This was just crummy all around! One day to respond to a survey that includes open-ended questions, using a pdf that doesn't permit typed in answers, so basically one is forced to print and mail the thing! I was busy yesterday, my son graduated from high school, and I didn't have time to fiddle with the pdf form filler. My comment to PAG is that if you want public comment, make it easy for the public to comment. This was lame beyond lame.

Yeah, and I gave "Provide improvements that benefitthe greatest number of people" a *1* rating.It was a bad survey.Also, too, why such a late notice on the deadline?

Cyclovia is the what they called the event here in Tucson. I am actually not sure why they spelled it that way, though.

Okay so I did it and faxed it in but the dang thing is slippery. For example, it asks if I think the new plan should "relieve congestion." Heck yeah! But . . . what they mean by that really is do I think they should build wider roads with fewer stoplights. Not "get people out of their cars," like I naturally assumed at first. And it asks if I want the plan to "improve safety." Oh man, I sure do! But what they mean by that of course is all manner of design changes that make the world safe for cars and carheads and dangerous and hostile and all but uninhabitable for the rest of us.Beware this thing! --Erik Ryberg

did you mean to spell it 'cyclovia' instead of 'ciclovia'?
