The man arrested yesterday in the hit-and-run death of a bicyclist riding to work last month was charged with DUI a year ago.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department arrested Enrique F. Hernandez, 24, on second degree murder and leaving the seen of a crash in the death of Sun Tran driver John Akers, yesterday.
Akers was riding his bike to work when he was allegedly struck and killed by Hernandez near the intersection of Irvington and Mission Roads last month.
According to court records, Hernandez has had two other traffic issues including a DUI in May of 2012.
According to the record, it was Hernandez’ first DUI and his blood-alcohol level was above .08. He was also ticketed for not having a valid driver license at the time of the stop.
Pima County Deputies allege alcohol was involved in the crash that killed Akers.
In 2009 Hernandez was stopped and ticketed for not having a valid driver license and not having mandatory insurance.
According to the court record from yesterday’s arrest, Hernandez is being held on $500,000 bail.
