LSA launches streetcar crash reporting tool

Living Streets Alliance launched a tool for cyclists to report crashes caused by the streetcar tracks.

The goal is to record data about where crashes are happening most frequently and use that information to improve the system.

Here’s what LSA said about the project:

We’re super excited for Tucson’s future Modern Streetcar.  It will be a great way to introduce people to mass transit and to connect multiple forms of alternative transportation in the downtown/University area.  That said, streetcar tracks and bicycle tires don’t always get along!  It’s really easy for bicycles to get caught in the tracks if they don’t cross at the right angle.  These types of accidents happen all the time even now, but they rarely get reported unless there’s a serious injury.  We’re hoping to provide people with a place to report their bicycle/streetcar accidents so that we can offer recommendations for how to prevent them in the future. 

The form asks for specific details about the crash, including: location, types and severity of injuries and much more. Check it out here.

Have they got plans to post some sort of info along the route to let folks know that they can report an incident and where to report it and that they should report it?

Ummmm, zeez, if something like that was along the route, imagine the bad PR. I mean, come on. This is the MODERN streetcar. And the risk it poses to bicyclists is such a downer!

Me neither. I'm a green tea gal myself. Got some that began as sun tea this morning. Looks like that plan got scratched. Call it rain tea now.

All of this could have been prevented if we had been listened to during the streetcar planning phase. All of it. Mark my words. Failure to listen to the bicycling community is going to cost lives. And, in turn, the city. It's just a matter of time before the lawsuits begin.
