More enforcement coming to Tucson Mountain Park

Cyclists who ride in Tucson Mountain Park may see stepped up enforcement by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department after complaints from employees who work for Old Tucson Studios.

According to Deputy Ryan Roher the Sheriff’s Department received a letter complaining about the behavior of cyclists riding in Tucson Mountain Park.

Roher believes the Sheriff’s Department will likely begin targeting the area.

TPCBAC members requested that the enforcement not only target cyclists, but that car drivers would also be included in the enforcement activity.

Roher paraphrased some of the letter for the TPCBAC. The letter stated that cyclists riding In Tucson Mountain Park do not use common sense or follow roadway laws. They cited cyclists going 5 miles per hour up hills and cyclists going 10-15 miles per hour over the speed limit on downhills.

Additionally, they cited cyclists failing to stop at stop signs and urinating on the side of the road.

In addition to increased Sheriff’s department presence, they also asked that the laws be changed for Tucson Mountain Park so that cyclists would be required to ride single file and 20 feet apart.

Pima County Bike and Pedestrian Coordinator Matt Zoll said he looked at accident data in Tucson Mountain Park for the last 11 years to determine whether the cyclists in the area are really causing accidents. The data suggests that only 2 percent of the 337 documented accidents in Tucson Mountain Park involved cyclists.

    Also, regarding stop signs: how many times have you seen a car roll a stop sign? Just asking.
    First they came for my bicyclists riding two abreast, but I said nothing because I didn’t ride two abreast.

    Can we get some enforcement on Mountain Ave? The speeders are out of control. The speed limit is currently 15 MPH but most cars are going 35-40. Today I even saw a car parked in the bike lane. I don’t think I have ever seen someone do that before.

    They’re really going to complain about cyclists doing only 5 miles an hour up Gates Pass area? It is a bit steep ya know.

    Of all the things to complain about … cyclist? Some people just have too much time on their hands.

    I just ran the Sunrise at Old Tucson Trail race and now am upset that employees would complain. We rode out there and then ran the race.

    And I was unaware that going less than 5 mph is against the law?

    So if I write a letter with general complaints about car traffic in my neighborhood, will they come do a targeted enforcement? Is that all it takes, one person, to direct the a chunk of tax-payer resources?

    Ditto with 4th ave. as to the Mountain comment… They just lowered the speed limit from 30 to 25 in prep for the implementation of the bike boulevard and people still are going 45 down the street fairly frequently. Can I call to complain about that and get a patrol task force? Good grief.
