New data on Tucson cycling
The Alliance for Biking & Walking, which was formerly known as the Thunderhead Alliance, released their 2010 Benchmarking Report.
The report concludes that a lack of investment in bike and pedestrian infrastructure may be contributing to higher fatalities among cyclists and pedestrians.
The key figures in their report show that cyclists and walkers make up 9.6 percent of all trips, but account for 13.1 percent of all traffic fatalities, while receiving 1.2 percent of federal transportation funding.
The report also ranks Tucson and Arizona in several categories. I included some of the interesting statistics from the report.
- According to the report, Arizona is in the middle third of states when it comes to the amount of people taking trips by bike or foot, while Tucson ranked in the top third.
- Arizona ranked in the lowest third in safety, while Tucson was in the middle third.
- Both Arizona and Tucson ranked in the top third when it came to funding levels.
- Tucson fares far better than Phoenix when it comes to everything except advocacy, where Tucson is ranked in the lower third of cities.
- The report ranks Tucson 15th when it comes bicycling and walking levels. Arizona is ranked 29th overall.
- Tucson is ranked 29th lowest in fatality rates. Kansas City has the lowest and Jacksonville has the highest. Phoenix ranked 46th. As a state, Arizona ranked 43rd.
- Tucson is ranked number five overall when it comes to bicycle and pedestrian funding per capita. Phoenix is 38th.
- Tucson ranks 5th in per capita biking to work. Phoenix is 28th. Portland topped the list.
- According to the report, 1.9 percent of Tucson commuters use a bike to get to work compared to 0.5 percent for Phoenix.
- 24 percent of Tucson bicycle commuters are women, which is also the median for all the cities.
- Tucson is ranked as the 24th safest bicycling city. Phoenix is ranked 42nd.
- 4.1 percent of Tucson traffic fatalities are cyclists. Mesa had the highest percentage at 7.9 percent. Portland is at 7.8 percent.
- Tucson spends 3.2 percent of their federal transportation funding on bike and pedestrian programs.
- Tucson ranks third in infrastructure with 3.5 miles of bike facilities per square mile.
The report is pretty interesting if you are into numbers and data. Check it out here
