2011 El Tour de Tucson: Where all those cyclists came from
Editor’s note: This is one of several posts about the 2011 El Tour de Tucson. Check out stories about how the celebrity cyclists fared, and look for a video, a post about the Cargo Bike El Tour de Tucson, an editorial, a searchable database of results.
Roughly 6,350 cyclists completed one of the 4 distances of the 2011 El Tour de Tucson on Saturday. About 40 percent of them call Pima County home, but that means the majority were visiting Tucson to participate in the ride.
In fact their are 975 different hometowns for riders that participated in El Tour de Tucson, some of which are thousands of miles away from Tucson including places like Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
Check the map above to get a sense of where all those cyclists hail from. If you click on the dots, you can see how people came from that particular location.
Here are the top 30 hometowns:
TUCSON, AZ: 2286 PHOENIX, AZ: 242 ORO VALLEY, AZ: 185 MESA, AZ: 146 SCOTTSDALE, AZ: 139 ALBUQUERQUE, NM: 123 CHANDlER, AZ: 120 GILBERT, AZ: 109 SAN DIEGO, CA: 65 VAIL, AZ: 58 FLAGSTAFF, AZ: 57 MARANA, AZ: 57 TEMPE, AZ: 55 EL PASO, TX: 53 SAHUARITA, AZ: 53 PEORIA, AZ: 50 SIERRA VISTA, AZ: 46 LAS VEGAS, NV: 37 GLENDALE, AZ: 33 SEATTLE, WA: 29 DENVER, CO: 28 NOGALES, AZ: 28 PRESCOTT, AZ: 27 GREEN VALLEY, AZ: 23 CHICAGO, IL: 20 COLORADO SPRINGS, CO: 20 HERMOSILLO, Sonora Mexico: 19 HOUSTON, TX: 19 QUEEN CREEK, AZ: 18The farthest distance traveled to attend the race goes to Hakon Runer, who’s hometown was listed as Dubai, which is 8,395 miles by plane from Tucson.
I’m a bit skeptical of this entry, however. A Google search shows some evidence Dubai might be accurate, but it also shows a quote from Runer on a KGUN 9 piece saying he is from Norway.
The next farthest participant goes to Kenichi Hagiwara from Tokyo Japan, which is 5,927 miles away.
