I am starting a new commute soon and was wondering if anyone has advice on the best route. It is from the pima/country club area to Cushing Street near the convention center. I have been commuting in the opposite direction by bike for the last two years and tend to take relatively safe/slower routes. Thanks

I'd have to ride it to make sure, and possibly make a few minor adjustments, but I would try Treat south to 3rd into campus and connect to Highland south to 9th (or 10th might be a little more mellow), which takes you straight to the 4th Ave underpass (or you could cross the tracks at 7th, which is a little safer but a couple blocks further), if you cross at 4th (mind the trolley tracks), Herbert to 13th looks direct and not too bad.

8pm Addendum: Since I'm not too familiar with the downtown area, I detoured through on my way home tonight.  As you take the 4th Ave underpass, on the far side of Congress right after the merge is an alley that cuts South to Broadway (that might be the Herbert I saw on the map, but I didn't see a sign), where you can jog back East a bit to continue South on 4th.  Looks like a fairly low-hassle route, at least it was tonight.  On the way back, you could either jog East on Broadway to turn onto Toole and back to the Underpass, or just dismount and cross at the crosswalk to cut through the parking lot and onto Toole, which is what I did.

I was thinking you could also take the same route through the UA, but rather than turn left onto 4th ave., you could continue on University across the bike crossing to Stone Ave. and then turn left onto Main/Granada and then continue south to Cushing St.

Here is a link to the proposed route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3439018

Is there a pedestrian crossing at Treat and Speedway? Otherwise you could continue on Pima to UMC and then cross under Speedway using one of the tunnels at the UA and then hit University blvd from there.

I'll be curious to find out which route you end up using and why. Stay safe.

Today I took pima/lester to 4th Avenue to University to main/granada to cushing. The pima/lester part was out of curiosity because it was a bike route on the pima county bike map and to avoid campus: it was safe but likely not the fastest route with lots of stop signs. 4th avenue was safe but very rough north of speedway. main/granada had connectivity issues with bike lanes disappearing but seemed the most simple way to get there, and was relatively easy to take the lane when it was necessary. Overall relatively safe and fast despite the rain. I am planning on taking treat to university tomorrow.

How did the other routes workout? Which one are you going to use?
